Mmmmonday...

I was seriously sleep-deprived, and it hit me this afternoon. I didn't have much on the schedule but my CLE classes. Now, I have to start them over from the half way mark, because I don't remember a thing that was said in the 2nd and 3rd hours.

Other than the journey to the Blue Light on Friday, I was a major homebody this weekend. Who can leave the house with 24 hours of Jackass on MTV??? I also watched the much-hyped Tennessee/Memphis game...and the game lived up to it. I cannot wait for March Madness. I already have my VIP pass from NCAA.com and can't wait for the conference tournaments to begin. My favorite time of year...and least productive.

I was tempted to meet some people out on Saturday, but by the time the game ended I no longer felt like going out. I missed Charlie at The Office, but maybe I'll go and see him play at the BL tomorrow.

I may be in DFW this weekend (well, Saturday and Sunday) for a family get together on Saturday afternoon. I'm thinking that if I can sneak away, maybe I'll see Charlie at Woody's. That's a nice bonus.

How I wish I could be in Dallas next weekend instead. I'm sure the tickets for the Avs/Stars game are selling well. Today, Peter Forsberg announced he'll be playing for the Avs for the remainder of the season. Who knows if he'll come back next year, maybe I'll be lucky enough to see a playoff game?

change of plans

It looks like I will be seeing Mike McClure this weekend. Following phone calls, unexpected schedule changes and an exchange of emails, it looks like I will not be making the trip to OKC this weekend. I'm sure I'll be there within the next week or two. So long as I'm there before the 22nd of next month, all's well.

My sister's in Chicago right now for a conference. I keep getting random text messages like: at DePaul U, eating at Gino's, getting ready for the Bulls game... I'm completely jealous, but not so much of the 15 degree weather. While she was in the planning stages of the trip, I told her she NEEDED to make her way to the Dierks show tonight and then make her way to Stoney's after-party. I know there's not a chance in the world she'll go.

I was watching Starter for 10 a few weeks ago and was struck by how much James McAvoy reminds me of Gregory Smith (or maybe that's just my way of coping with the early cancellation of Everwood). I still haven't seen Atonement, and probably won't until it's released on DVD...but I really like him. Whether it's in Band of Brothers, Wimbledon, Shakespeare Re-Told: Macbeth, Becoming Jane or even The Chronicles of Narnia...

Oscars this weekend...I still miss the parties with Jeanne, Rick and Mark. Best comments ever. We sure did find a lot of ways to put off studying during law school.

Has everyone seen Gone Baby Gone by now? I just saw it this weekend. It's certainly not something you want to watch to cheer you up, but what a good movie. The way the story unfolds is fairly unconventional, I wasn't expecting the initial resolution to come so quickly. Obviously, I haven't read anything about it, because I'm sure a quick search on the internet will divulge some major spoilers regarding the characters involved.

I spent Friday night with some friends and family at another birthday dinner and then crossed the street for some pre-Ryan Turner show daiquiris. Some = way too many. Ryan came over and encouraged everyone to stick around for the show next door. About half of us went over for the show and had a great time. The band blew the breakers three times...the third time blew the electricity throughout the bar. Fun. RT was in rare form and we had fun catching up afterwards. He remains one of my faves, not just the show, but him, as a person. I wish him the best in his upcoming adventure.

Saturday, to my own surprise, I woke up fairly early (so you know that means 10). I made my way to my parents' house and found an empty house upon arrival. Apparently, everyone was at my Grandma's, so I spent the majority of the day reading and searching for a hotel online. Rain started falling early that night, but I decided to make the trek back for the Motorcars' show. I'm so glad I did. The place was PACKED. They sounded great, played 3 or 4 new ones and retained most of the crowd throughout the show. I didn't hang around too long afterwards. I thought about driving to the south side of town to see if Ben was still on stage, but thought better of it and went home. I had to be up and ready for lunch at my grandma's house yesterday.

Last night, I watched QuinceaƱera. Loved it. I don't have too much more to say about it than that. I also caught Dexter on CBS. Motherlover...hahaha. Just rent the DVDs from the first and second seasons if you're at all interested.

Is this nerdy, or would you go?

Former President Clinton is slated to stop in town for a political rally sometime this weekend if the weather holds. Senator Obama is tentatively slated for the last week of the month. There's been no mention of a stop from John McCain...and, really, why would he? I'll probably try to go to both of the above, if time allows. I've seen the past two governors of Texas, a number of state senators and representatives, the former governor of Oklahoma, and a former Supreme Court Justice speak within the recent past.

Only one of those mentioned occurred during an election year. I find most interesting the speech unrelated to politics; the discussion of the road that led them to their position.

The party association doesn't mean much to me. The parties are one of extremes and I'd say most people fall somewhere in the middle. There's not a single candidate with whom I agree wholeheartedly. The political science nerd in me is curious to see if the nation votes in another Clinton, leading to 24 years under two families.

It's times like these I miss being in class. The discussions had in school were always heated during an election year. People were not shy about sharing their emotions following the 2000 election. I remember staying up until 3 or 4 that night, the networks going back and forth in declaring a winner in key states. The decision of the Supreme Court provided our professors with great teaching material that year.

Reading this back, no need to respond...definite nerd.

a little warning would be nice...

It's not a great start to the day when you're in the middle of getting ready for work and discovering the water has been shut off.

A sprinkler system is being installed and yesterday they did all the digging around the front and back yards. This morning, the actual sprinkler heads and testing would be performed. Is it too much to ask for a little warning?

The winners of the World Press Photo of 2007 were announced yesterday. There are some amazing shots, most of which I'd never seen.

Thursday, February 7

Ash Wednesday, and I didn't go to church. I passed out on cough medication and woke up at various times throughout the night. I'm not giving up anything for Lent, besides sleep really. I gave up cokes last year. It was more of a habit than a need, so it wasn't hard. I've told myself that instead of giving something up, I'll get to work on time. Believe me, that's a goal.

On the days I'm not set for court, I take my time getting in to the office. I don't think anyone cares, if they do...they sure know how to hold their tongue for the past two years. I generally stay later than everyone else anyway, or work through lunch time if there's a deadline. It just reached ridiculous proportions a few weeks ago when I was 75 mins "late"...

I guess I can say now, since she's already written about it, my sister, Becky, and Brady are having a baby. The due date is mid-September. My nieces were beyond ecstatic when they heard. They have their fingers crossed for a boy. The shrieks were unbelievable.

I already posted about these on myspace, but the blunt nature of these letters make me laugh.

My plans for tonight - LOST
Tomorrow - was to see Charlie, but this cough won't go away *tear*
Saturday - was to go to Odessa to see RRB, see above *sniff, sniff, tear*

If I'm not rid of this thing by the time the weekend's over, I'm going to go crazy. I've got a project with my sister, Monica, to work on anyway. I'm sure I'll find something to do in a smoke-free place this weekend...my lungs will thank me.

I can't stress the word "NO" enough...

We have a fairly new case that resulted from some of the saddest circumstances imaginable. Today, we got the initial discovery, so the police reports, medical examiner findings, oral statements, and pictures were delivered to the office.

I made the requests, so they had my name on the envelope, but one of the legal assistants goes through the mail before anyone else. She told me what had arrived and then proceeded to ask if I wanted to see the autopsy photos... NO! I do not want to see them in any way, shape or form. I'm not even a lead on the case, I was just covering for another attorney that was busy with a trial out of town and the information was needed. I did, however, watch the dvd containing interviews with a few of the people involved. I wish I hadn't.

It's much easier to remain detached from the situation when you only know the facts as relayed through a few pieces of paper...not possible after seeing a young person give their account of the events. There are no winners in this case...both sides are going to lose, regardless of the resolution.

Cheery Monday...
